Hoimin was born in Goyang, South Korea. After discovering his passion for organic chemistry towards the end of high school, Hoimin pursued a bachelor's degree in Chemistry at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). During his undergraduate period, he worked with Professor Mu-Hyun Baik (KAIST/IBS) to learn applied computational chemistry for reaction mechanism study. Later then, Hoimin quickly turned out that his interest is more focused on the experiments, which led him to join Professor Sukbok Chang's group.
His interest is focused on developing C–H amination reactions using transition metal catalysis and photoredox catalysis. Also, Hoimin has an interest in building statistical models to explain reaction outcomes using data science tools.
